Last night at Verizon Center:

Seen AND Heard

Defenseman John Erskine, signed as a free agent on Sept. 14, cleared waivers yesterday and has been reassigned to Hershey. The move is good news for about three players thought to be on the bubble. The Caps have 22 players on the active roster and one, left wing Matt Pettinger, on injured reserve.

Noteworthy

Kris Beech was picked seventh overall in 1999 by the Caps but played only four games before being traded. He played 100 NHL games elsewhere, returned last season and played five more, but had no goals with Washington. That drought ended last night with a first-period slap shot that beat Florida’s Alex Auld.

By the numbers

It had been a long time between points in a Caps uniform for Richard Zednik (five years). Last night he got his 300th NHL point — and 117th as a Cap — assisting on a goal by Alexander Semin.
