Last night at Verizon Center

Seen and heard

The Caps placed right wing Matt Bradley on seven-day injured reserve. He sustained what is being described as an “lower body” injury during the team’s 1-0 exhibition victory over Philadelphia. The Caps recalled left wing Tomas Fleischmann from Hershey. He was the next-to-last cut in training camp and had a goal and an assist in preseason. Two games into the season, Washington already has lost five man-games to injury.

Noteworthy

After the first period last night, Olie Kolzig had played exactly 35,000 minutes in net for Washington in regular season games. That’s the equivalent of 583 60-minute games. Kolzig’s total is more than double any other goalie in Caps history. Don Beaupre is second with 15,186 minutes.

Ovechkin watch

Before the game, left wing Alex Ovechkin had gone three games without a goal, including the end of last season. If the exhibition season was included, the reigning NHL Rookie of the Year had gone seven games without a goal. That streak ended at 8:04 in the third period with his first goal of the season. His last previous goal was in the next-to-the-last game of last season — April 17 against Atlanta. It may not mean anything, but he didn’t score in the final game last season with old sticks and had gone six games this season without a goal since the curvature of sticks was increased by a quarter of an inch to three-quarters of an inch.
