Shawn Hill‘s string of dominant starts has sure made a lasting impression with the Nationals organization. With seven innings of one-run ball Friday night, the 26-year-old right-hander recorded his ninth quality start in 11 outings this season.

He has given up three earned runs just once this season. And he has positioned himself to take on a significant role next season and beyond.

Asked about Hill before last night’s game, general manager Jim Bowden replied: “Our ace, you mean?”

Yes, it may not be too early to pencil Hill in for Opening Day 2008.

“I don’t think there’s any question that we’re going to learn a lot in the next month. Our season isn’t ending until October.”
