SEEN AND HEARD IN VIERA

Go ahead and start the season — third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is ready. Since the beginning of spring, manager Manny Acta has been telling reporters that Zimmerman is ready. Yesterday, in his first at-bat of the spring in an intrasquad game, Zimmerman doubled off the fence in straightaway center field, driving in Felipe Lopez. One inning later, Zimmerman displayed his glovework when he made a diving catch to his right that robbed Jorge Toca of a sure base hit.

“It’s better than the slow ones — you either make it or you don’t,” Zimmerman said. At the plate, Zimmerman went 1-for-2 with a fly out to center field.

What did the manager think of his performance? “He sure looked today like it was June already, so that’s nice to see,” Acta said. “But don’t waste all those [productive] at-bats down here.”
