It is an understatement to describe this home as “unique.” The home maintains a dramatic presence in the Sligo Park Hills neighborhood of Silver Spring. It features gray cinder blocks with huge windows, glass walls and an exterior iron spiral staircase.

As guests approach this home located at 128 Hilltop Road, they may hear Sligo Creek babbling in the background. It’s a fun walk from the driveway up a winding stone stairway to the front door. Built in 1995, the architect/owner designed the home to be environmentally friendly. In addition, the current owners have added renovations and upgrades that pay special attention to the environment. Inside, just off the foyer to the right, is a casual dining room that is open to the kitchen. The dining room features a wall of windows, a 20-foot-high ceiling and a modern chandelier.

On the lower level is a family room, two bedrooms, a bath and a laundry area. The family room has exposed, curved cinder-block walls and a large, semicircle window. The owners chose Flor modular carpet tiles because they are made with renewable and recycled content.

Each of the rooms on this level has recessed lighting. The fourth bedroom currently doubles as a home office and boasts a skylight and glass doors to the patio. The laundry area comes with an Amana washer and dryer and ceramic tile floors.

The outdoor living spaces are just as impressive as the indoor spaces. The basement level has a walk-out to a full view of the creek and adjacent parkland. Since there is no lawn, there is very little yard maintenance (other than raking leaves).
