It is an understatement to describe this home as “unique.” The home maintains a dramatic presence in the Sligo Park Hills neighborhood of Silver Spring. It features gray cinder blocks with huge windows, glass walls and an exterior iron spiral staircase.

As guests approach this home located at 128 Hilltop Road, they may hear Sligo Creek babbling in the background. It’s a fun walk from the driveway up a winding stone stairway to the front door. Built in 1995, the architect/owner designed the home to be environmentally friendly. In addition, the current owners have added renovations and upgrades that pay special attention to the environment. The home is now on the market for $995,000.

Inside, just off the foyer to the right, is a casual dining room that is open to the kitchen. The dining room features a wall of windows, a 20-foot-high ceiling and a modern chandelier.

A breakfast bar separates the dining area from the kitchen. Remodeled in 2006, the kitchen features Euro-style cabinets (many with glass fronts), EnviroGlas countertops made from recycled glass bottles, a bow-tie shaped sink made of recycled aluminum, track lighting and upgraded Jenn-Air stainless steel appliances.

Just across the entry hall, an arched opening in the cinder-block wall welcomes guests into the stylish living room. This room has two dramatic, 12-foot round windows and a glass window wall with a door that opens onto a patio. There is also a powder room on this level.

The mix of exposed cinder-block walls, some curved, with glass walls helps create visual excitement.

Hardwood floors appear throughout the main level and in the second-floor bedrooms.

A glass-paneled floating staircase sits on the back wall of the living room and leads to the master bedroom and another bedroom on the upper level. However, before reaching the upper level, there is a door to an exterior spiral staircase that leads to a rooftop patio.

A loft or study area provides a private space that can be accessed from below.

The master bedroom features a curved, exposed cinder-block wall with a variety of windows. Glass-front closets have built-ins and make the room appear even more spacious. Among the unique features is a small Juliet balcony and an oculus skylight, a round glass insert in the hardwood floor.

The upstairs bath features a Kohler jetted soaking tub with ceramic-tile surround, a separate ceramic shower, double sinks, ceramic tile floor and a closet. This bath also can be accessed from the second bedroom.

On the lower level is a family room, two bedrooms, a bath and a laundry area. The family room has exposed, curved cinder-block walls and a large, semicircle window. The owners chose Flor modular carpet tiles because they are made with renewable and recycled content.

Each of the rooms on this level has recessed lighting. The fourth bedroom currently doubles as a home office and boasts a skylight and glass doors to the patio. The laundry area comes with an Amana washer and dryer and ceramic tile floors.

The outdoor living spaces are just as impressive as the indoor spaces. The basement level has a walk-out to a full view of the creek and adjacent parkland. Since there is no lawn, there is very little yard maintenance (other than raking leaves).

The owners recently added a brick-paver patio with a hot tub and a cozy fire pit surrounded by slate-capped stone walls. There’s also a custom deck made of recycled materials with steel cable railings.

Additional features include landscaping with native plants to secure soil runoff into Sligo Creek and new hardscaping (to redirect storm water runoff) built with reused flagstone and boulders. The home also has dual-zone central air conditioning, a gas furnace with new motor and a new, sun-reflective roof.
