Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Tuesday that the United States is prepared to deal with any military threat from China.

“We have the capability in place to deal with any Chinese threat for some time to come,” he told the Senate Armed Services Committee in wide-ranging testimony.

It marked the first time that Mr. Gates appeared before Congress in his role as Pentagon chief in the Obama administration. President George W. Bush appointed him to the position on Dec. 18, 2006.
