Northern Virginia residents may recognize a distinctive Reston-style home: contemporary yet warm, with wood and stone and glass walls blending with the surrounding woods. One of Reston’s classic examples at 2514 Trophy Lane is now on the market for $859,000.

Built in 1966, this home rests on what Realtor Paddy Murphy says is “Reston’s best lot.” Not only does the home occupy the end of a cul-de-sac, but the entire back of the property faces woods with a meandering creek, a walking trail and even a charming gazebo rest area.

The owners transformed this contemporary home four years ago by bumping out the back of the lower level and extending the two-level deck into the fenced yard. At the same time, most of the windows and doors in the home were replaced with larger walls of glass. The kitchen, which is wrapped in windows, was upgraded with granite counters and stainless steel appliances.

A circular drive winds around a landscaped front yard with tall trees, flowering shrubs and perennial plants. A detached two-car garage at one side of the drive matches the distinctive design of the house. The fenced backyard has plenty of space for play equipment, and the deck has built-in seating.

A covered front stoop leads to the double-front door, which opens into a wide reception area with a back wall of glass framing a dramatic view of the woods. The foyer has stone floors.

To the right of the foyer is the living room, which features a dramatic vaulted wood-beamed ceiling, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace with a raised brick hearth and a wall of windows with glass doors leading to the deck.

Next to the living room, the dining room features walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. The entire main level, with the exception of the foyer, has hardwood floors.

Beyond the dining room is the kitchen, which has been upgraded and enhanced with granite counters and stainless steel appliances. The vaulted, beamed ceiling of the living room continues into the kitchen.

On the opposite side of the foyer, double doors lead into the bedroom wing. At the end of this wing is the master bedroom suite, which has floor-to-ceiling windows and a sitting area. A three-sided glass fireplace warms the bedroom and the sitting area. A deep walk-in closet with built-in organizers is adjacent to the bedroom.

The luxurious master bath has been updated and includes a soaking tub set under a wall of windows with views of the woods, a double-sink vanity and a glass-enclosed shower.

Two generously sized bedrooms with double-door closets and built-in organizers are also along this bedroom wing, where all the rooms have hardwood floors. These bedrooms share a full bath off the hall.

The above-ground lower level features an expanded recreation room with a wall of windows and glass doors to the backyard and deck. A floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace dominates one wall of this room. Double glass doors lead into a home office.

Just past the recreation room is an additional open space suitable for a pool table, a bar or exercise equipment.

The fourth bedroom includes a double-door closet (and is currently in use as a play room). The fifth bedroom, which has a double-door closet, includes multiple windows for plenty of natural light. These two bedrooms share a full bath off the hall.

The lower level also includes a utility and laundry room and an expansive storage room. The home has a surround system and recessed lighting in every room.

The owners have entertained crowds of more than 80 people in this well-designed home, which has ample space and an appealing, flowing floor plan.

Newcomers to Reston will find it an easy place to make new friends and entertain old ones, since the community includes two community centers, 11 arts organizations, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, athletic fields and miles of walking trails.

At Reston Town Center, visitors can enjoy countless restaurants and shops, a movie theater and an ice-skating rink that is transformed into an outdoor concert venue in the summer months.

The community includes two golf courses and four lakes, along with acres of open space and multiple shopping villages with stores and restaurants.
