With the season opener against Philadelphia less than 48 hours away, the Nationals trimmed the roster down to 31 players, most notably optioning Scott Olsen to Triple-A Syracuse.

The left-hander, who was in the mix for the fifth spot in the Nationals’ rotation to start the season, pitched well in the team’s final exhibition game Friday in Florida, but loses the role to Garrett Mock.

Olsen isn’t the only one heading to the Internation League, as outfielder Roger Bernadina goes to central New York. Infielder Eric Bruntlett and Mike MacDougal, whom the club reacquired this spring, are heading to minor-league camp.

The Nationals conclude their spring training play Saturday when the Boston Red Sox visit Nationals Park.
