Some of the most interesting homes in the District may never catch the eye of a passer-by, even when their charms are visible from the street.

American University Park has too many homes with deep front porches, Craftsman-style detailing or Victorian flair to allow every home to receive proper attention. Yet the home at 4337 Ellicott St. NW should stand out as a neighborhood gem.

On the market for $1,100,000, this single-family home of stone, stucco and vinyl siding features a blend of Old World craftsmanship found in a wood-beamed ceiling, wood columns and interior trim, with updated bathrooms, a renovated kitchen and rooms flooded with natural light from skylights and myriad windows. Stone retaining walls define the professionally landscaped front gardens, which flank a winding flagstone front walk that leads to a flagstone front stoop and splashy, arched, red-painted front door.

The backyard of this home is equally enticing, with a low-maintenance composite deck, a covered back porch and a flagstone patio with adjacent garden beds.

Inside, the formal two-story foyer includes dramatic slate flooring, a chandelier and solid wood doors leading to a deep coat closet and a powder room with a floral sink and peach-tinted walls. The arched, solid wood doors are matched by oversized wood trim around the doorway leading into the living room.

The living room features a wall of windows on the side of the room surrounded by wood trim, natural wood crown moldings and restored hardwood flooring. The casement windows feature built-in roll-down screens for privacy. The focal point for this room is the wood-burning fireplace with a marble hearth, which is flanked by built-in wood bookcases with leaded glass doors.

Wood columns flank the entrance to the formal dining room, which has a deep bay window with a seat facing the front gardens. The dining room features crown moldings, a wood-beamed ceiling, hardwood flooring and pocket doors, which can close off the room during formal entertaining, leading into the kitchen.

The renovated kitchen includes recessed lighting and a bay window over the double sink. The kitchen has Corian counters, a pantry, pale wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances, including a built-in microwave, a downdraft range with a convection oven, a dishwasher and a refrigerator with an ice and water dispenser. A separate bar sink and an undermount wine cooler/refrigerator are located on the kitchen counter closest to the family room.

The family room features new windows with transoms, a gas fireplace with a marble surround and glass doors, and a glass door to the covered porch. The porch has a new deck and skylights.

Adjacent to the kitchen and family room is a conveniently located laundry closet with a front-loading washer and dryer.

The main level also includes a master suite. The master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, hardwood flooring and a private spiral staircase leading to the second level. The master sitting room has four floor-to-ceiling windows, a vaulted ceiling, skylights, a ceiling fan and a glass door to the porch. Adjacent to this sitting room is a room-size walk-in closet with built-in shelving. The new master bath features two skylights, custom-designed tile work, a stained-glass window, a glass-enclosed shower and a marble vanity.

Upstairs, an expansive open loft with a Palladian window, skylights and a cathedral ceiling could function as a sun-filled home office or a second family room. Nearby are a deep linen closet and a storage closet under the eaves.

The second bedroom has three windows with built-in miniblinds, a walk-in closet with storage shelves and access to attic storage, plus a second storage closet under the eaves.

The third bedroom, which also would make a convenient home office, has hardwood flooring, three windows facing the rear gardens, a skylight, a walk-in storage room and a walk-in closet. Adjacent to this room is the spiral staircase leading to the master suite, allowing for this space to function as a second-level office addition to the first-floor master suite, if desired.

The fourth bedroom includes a double-door storage closet and three windows. Adjacent to this bedroom is charming alcove with skylights, a window overlooking the foyer, a window seat and carpeting. It is easy to imagine children choosing this space as their favorite hideaway.

The upper level also includes an elegant renovated full bath with travertine flooring, a travertine tub-and-shower surround and a whirlpool tub. This bath has beadboard walls, a large window and a granite counter above a curving wood vanity.

The lower level, reached by a staircase from the kitchen, has been fully finished with Berber carpeting. The lower level includes a recreation room, a bedroom, a full bath and a kitchenette with a washer and dryer. This level also has a door to the backyard and extensive storage space. The bedroom, bath and kitchenette create a perfect au pair suite.

Additional features of this home include a security system, gas-fired hot-water baseboard radiator heat and a relatively new water heater.

Residents may be tempted to stay close to home in this charming place, sitting by one of the fireplaces in winter or enjoying the porch and garden in summer, but they also will find it easy to participate in city living. Plenty of shops and restaurants can be found within blocks on Wisconsin Avenue, and both the Tenleytown and Friendship Heights Metro stations are within walking distance for easy access to the rest of the District’s dining, shopping, cultural and entertainment venues.
