LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers and the city’s police chief are vowing to make Dodger Stadium the safest sports venue in the United States.

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck made the promise at a news conference Thursday behind the stadium’s right-field pavilion three hours before the game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Police helicopters whirled overhead as they spoke and officers circled on motorcycles, bicycles and in patrol cars. Farther down the hill in a stadium parking lot, more than 40 black and white patrol cars could be seen parked in a tight formation.

The security crackdown is in response to the beating of a San Francisco Giants fan in the parking lot following the teams’ season opener last month.
