Wesley Pruden’s column (“The failure of liberal gods,” Aug. 12), in which he analyzes the general malaise of the “progressives,” hits the nail on the head.

These folks used to be called liberals. Mr. Pruden rightly says they are frightened by President Obama’s propensity for expanding the Washington debacle by more fraudulent messages, desperately want to continue to believe that former President George W. Bush, rather than the tax-and-spend liberals in office, is responsible for our current crisis, and, finally, are unable to understand how “such loathsome folk as the Tea Party voters are smarter than they are and were never fooled by the man.” Kudos to Mr. Pruden for saying this.

How was our current mess really birthed? Let’s look back to the events leading to Mr. Obama’s election. The information was available about his prior associates and their agenda, as was information about his lack of management experience in the real world. The electorate’s focus, however, was on his promises, which have come to naught. Furthermore, his supporters failed to study the history of the “Great Society” authored by Lyndon B. Johnson and Mr. Obama’s party, which has failed dismally by throwing good money after bad in failed social programs.

What do we do now, before the next election, to prevent the errors of our past? It’s very easy. One would only hope and pray that the electorate studies the history of the candidates and ignores their promises because, unless it wakes up and refuses to be spoon-fed erroneous information, we are doomed to repeat our past and get more of the same from our elected officials.
