A Landover woman was fatally struck by a vehicle early Thursday about a half mile from her home when she ran out into a roadway, Prince George’s County police said.

The woman has been identified as Lelia Whitfield, of the 3500 block of Hubbard Road.

Around 5:24 a.m. police were called to the 7600 block of Landover Road for a report of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle. Whitfield, who is described as in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained on the scene and police say they have ruled out speed or alcohol as causes of the collision.
“The vehicle had a green traffic signal at the time of the accident,” police spokesman Cpl. Mike Rodriguez said. “It looks like she ran out in the roadway for some reason.”

The only witness to the collision thus far is the driver, Cpl. Rodriguez said, and investigators would like to speak with anyone else who witnessed the crash.
