A 23-year-old New Carrollton man was shot to death Tuesday night as he played basketball with a group of friends at an elementary school, said Prince George’s County police.

Alusine Karbgo, of the 9300 block of Wellington Street, was among the group of people on the courts at Carrollton Elementary School when a person approached the group at about 8:50 p.m. and began firing into the crowd. Only Kargbo was struck, county police said.

Someone else had already taken Kargbo to a nearby hospital when New Carrollton and Prince George’s police officers arrived at the school, at 8300 Quintana Street. He died a few hours later.

Detectives are unsure whether Kargbo was the target of the shooting, said county police spokesman Cpl. Henry Tippett. Police are continuing to investigate the shooting.

This is the 47th criminal homicide in Prince George’s County this year, Tippett said. There have also been two justifiable homicides, committed in self-defense, and four fatal police shootings.
