LONDON — By not stressing over an Olympic medal, Reese Hoffa finally got one.

The 34-year-old American won a bronze in the shot put, finishing behind two-time champion Tomasz Majewski of Poland and David Storl of Germany on Friday night.

To Hoffa, it felt as good as gold, especially after the road he’s traveled. His mother gave him up for adoption when he was 4, shortly after he accidentally burned down the family’s home. They reunited later in life.

In his previous two Olympics, Hoffa wilted under the pressure of being one of the favorites, finishing seventh in Beijing and not making it out of qualifying in Athens.
