DETROIT (AP) - How does the Detroit Symphony Orchestra get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice _ and imagination.

The orchestra announced Monday it’s one of six major orchestras heading to the famous New York venue next year for the third Spring for Music festival. The Detroit ensemble plans to perform all four Charles Ives symphonies on May 10, 2013.

The orchestras are selected partially for the imaginative nature of their proposed programming.

The orchestra says it was selected to participate during its six-month musicians’ strike that ended last year. It was brought back into the lineup when its replacement, the Cincinnati Symphony, became unavailable.

Joining Detroit will be the orchestras from Baltimore and the New York cities of Albany and Buffalo. The others are the Oregon Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra.
