Two women were shot in their faces on the 1200 block of U Street Northwest early Saturday morning.

At about 1:15 a.m., two women were standing at the corner of 12th and U streets when they heard two “pop” sounds, D.C. police spokesman Anthony Clay said. A bullet hit one woman in her chin, and another grazed the second woman’s ear, he said.

The shooting appears to be random, Mr. Clay said. The victims did not know each other.

“The two women just happened to be in the same area,” Mr. Clay said.

When officers arrived, the women were conscious and breathing. They were transported to a local hospital for treatment, Mr. Clay said.

Mr. Clay said police are investigating, but do not have suspect or motive information.
