A Metro Transit Police detective shot and killed a man in the 7000 block of Lory Lane in Lanham on Wednesday.

Officials said the detective was conducting an investigation when an armed male fired on him at about 12:30 p.m. The detective returned fire, hitting the suspect. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified.

The detective was not injured and was placed on administrative duty until an internal investigation concludes, spokeswoman Caroline Lukas said. Prince George’s County police will conduct an investigation as well, spokesman Clinton Copeland said.

Metro Transit Police detectives investigate crimes that occur in transit facilities, like robberies and sexual assaults.

The last time a Metro officer was involved in a shooting was in 2008, Ms. Lukas said. In that incident, a Metro Transit officer and Virginia State Troopers pursued a vehicle, exchanging fire with the driver when he pulled over.
