Five people were shot and five others were stabbed, one fatally, over the weekend in the District, police said.

Two other shootings were reported through the Metropolitan Police Department’s Twitter account, but could not be confirmed by a police spokesman on Monday.

Two people, including a woman asleep in her home, were shot Saturday evening in Southeast. MPD spokesman Paul Metcalf said a man was walking at around 6:50 p.m. in the 3500 block of 22nd Street when he was hit, and a woman asleep in a home on the block was struck by what police think was a stray bullet.

Another shooting occurred early Saturday at the intersection of Southern Avenue and Fitch Street in Southeast. A group of people approached a man at around 1:10 a.m., and one person fired a gun, but did not strike the man, Officer Metcalf said.

Police said other shootings were reported early Sunday morning in the 2400 block of Elvans Road in Southeast, Sunday morning the 5200 block of Fitch Street in Southeast, and Sunday night at the intersection of 30th Street and Buena Vista Terrace in Southeast.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department Twitter account, a man was shot in the buttocks and taken to the hospital in the Elvans Road shooting, and a man was shot in the abdomen in the 5200 Fitch Street shooting. A woman was shot in the leg in the shooting at 30th Street and Buena Vista Terrace around 11:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Officer Metcalf said a description of suspects was not available in any of the shootings.

An additional shooting was reported through MPD’s Twitter account, stating a man was struck in the shoulder in the 400 block of 15th Street in Northeast on Saturday. Officer Metcalf said police were dispatched nearby to the 1400 block of F Street Northeast for a report of gunshots, but could not confirm a shooting victim was found.

Through MPD’s Twitter account, police also reported a shooting in the 1300 block of S Street Southeast on Sunday, but a police department spokesman had no information about the incident and could not confirm it occurred.

The only fatal attack of the weekend occurred Friday night in the 1200 block of North Capitol Street Northwest. Police arrested Herbert Hancock Hayes, 40, and he was charged with second-degree murder while armed in the fatal stabbing of John Wesley Griffin.

At 12:35 a.m. Sunday, a man was approached from behind while he was walking in the 2200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southeast and stabbed. Police said they are looking for a black man with a medium complexion and thought to be between 30 and 40 years old who was wearing fatigue pants in connection with that attack. The man fled the scene in a gray conversion van, Officer Metcalf said.

Two women stabbed each other during a fight Sunday night and were both arrested, Officer Metcalf said. The fight happened in the 300 block of 37th Street in Southeast. Both women were hospitalized, and each was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

A man was also stabbed during a domestic dispute Sunday in the 4500 block of South Capitol Street in Southeast. Robert Freeman was charged with assault with intent to kill after he got into a fight with another man around 8:45 p.m. that night, Officer Metcalf said.

In the weekend’s final incident, a man suffered a minor cut when another person swung a knife at him Sunday in the 4400 block of Iowa Avenue in Northwest. The victim refused to be transported to the hospital for treatment, Officer Metcalf said.
