Deborah Simmons rightly indicts the state of Pennsylvania for letting the house of horrors operated by abortionist Kermit Gosnell in Philadelphia continue for decades (“A doctor with a perverted view of life and death,” Web, April 17).

Pennsylvania is not the only state whose authorities are complicit with incompetent abortionists who care little about women’s health and safety. Maryland is a prime example of such complicity. There are numerous examples; a recent one is that of Leroy Carhart.

Late-term abortionist Leroy Carhart came to Maryland with a checkered background that he misrepresented on his application for a Maryland medical license. When pro-lifers informed the Maryland Board of Physicians (MBP), the board admonished Dr. Carhart, but did not revoke his license.

When the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene was presented with evidence that Dr. Carhart illegally dumped abortuary waste and patient records, the department did nothing for months until Jennifer Morbelli died in February, following the abortion of Madison Morbelli at 33 weeks’ gestation. Then the department claimed there was an active, ongoing investigation.

Dr. Carhart does not have hospital privileges in Maryland and left the state despite the complications Ms. Morbelli was suffering. When she went to the hospital, he could not be reached by hospital physicians to consult on her condition.

Following Ms. Morbelli’s death, the MBP was forced to investigate Dr. Carhart’s operation. They opened a “preliminary” investigation, which could take six months to complete. Rather than suspend Dr. Carhart’s license to determine the risks his methods present to women, they have allowed him to continue unabated. Maryland authorities have made abortion unsafe for women.
