Anthony Foxx, the mayor of Charlotte, N.C., since 2009, will be tapped as President Obama’s new Secretary of Transportation, according to multiple reports.

If confirmed, Mr. Foxx, who helped bring the 2012 Democratic National Convention to the city, would be the first black member appointed to Mr. Obama’s cabinet this year.

In February, Rep. Marcia Fudge, Ohio Democrat, wrote to Mr. Obama asking that he name Rep. James Clyburn, South Carolina Democrat and a civil rights pioneer, to the post.

Mr. Foxx would replace outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
