A Montgomery County elementary school teacher has been arrested on charges related to the sexual abuse of more than a dozen of his students, the rape of a young girl and possession of child pornography, police said Tuesday.

Lawrence Wesley Joynes, a music teacher at the New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Silver Spring was charged Aug. 8 with 14 counts of sex abuse of a minor and one count of third-degree sex offense — abuse that occurred at the school, police said. Mr. Joynes was also charged with second-degree rape and child abuse of a female victim who is now an adult, but police said Mr. Joynes abused her for three years in the 1990s.

Mr. Joynes, 54, has been a teacher at the elementary school for 10 years. Montgomery police said the sex abuse occurred in his classroom during an eight-year period between 2005 and 2013. His victims were in kindergarten, first and second grades.

Police said a child exploitation investigation conducted in February by the Homeland Security and Baltimore County Police revealed that Mr. Joynes owned child pornography. A search of his home and classroom uncovered videos and photographs of children. Police said the abuse ranged from “directing the victims and/or assisting the victims in imitating sexually suggestive gestures” to inappropriate touching.

The 54-year-old teacher lives in the 1900 block of Ormand Road in Dundalk. Police said he has been a Montgomery County Public School teacher for 27 years.
