HAMPTON, GA. (AP) - Martin Truex Jr. has a backup driver ready to step in should his broken right wrist keep him from finishing Sunday night’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Scott Speed qualified 37th in the No. 95 car but will take over the No. 56 for Michael Waltrip Racing if needed.

But Truex said Friday he expects to make it to the finish.

“I’m going to say there’s a 99 percent chance that I will race the whole race,” Truex said. “I felt really good today. We just wanted to have a plan in place just in case because I really wasn’t sure what to expect coming here.”

Truex fractured his wrist in a wreck at Bristol last weekend. He’s been fitted with a special cast that allows him to grip the steering wheel, and cleared by NASCAR to finish the season.

“I’ve never been hurt before, never had to drive hurt, never even had a cast on my hand,” he said. “So far, everything is going well.”

Truex currently holds the first wild-card position with two races to go to set the 12-driver field for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
