Republican Mark D. Obenshain has scheduled a 3 p.m. press conference in Richmond in which he will concede the Virginia attorney general’s race as preliminary recount results suggest he is falling farther behind.

A Republican source confirmed Mr. Obenshain called the afternoon news conference to announce his decision.

Mark R. Herring’s campaign said Tuesday night that the Democrat’s lead had grown to more than 800 votes in the hotly contested race.

A recount court in Richmond was examining the updated tallies from elections officials around the state and was expected to review what the Herring campaign said was fewer than 120 ballots that had been challenged in the course of the recount.

Going into the recount, Mr. Herring held a 165-vote margin over Mr. Obenshain in the closes election in modern Virginia history.

An Obenshain campaign spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment.
