A prisoner being transported to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary on Wednesday for specialty treatment wrested a gun away from the sheriff who was escorting him, and shot him in the leg.

Police say another officer then fired at the inmate, critically injuring him, The Associated Press reported.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said the pair of deputies was transporting the inmate for treatment and removed the handcuffs, AP reported. That’s when the inmate allegedly grabbed at the gun, police said.

The deputy was hit in the leg and is in stable condition, AP reported. The inmate was subsequently shot in the chest. Information on the inmate was not included in the report.
