For one day at least, the world’s ugliest, mangiest mutts will feel like canine royalty as judges at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif., crown a winner Friday of the 25th annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest.

The, ahem, winner of the contest takes home a trophy and a $1,500 cash award, along with a local restaurant meal that’s prepped by a top chef, the Daily Mail reported.

the pre-contest preening has been intense, as has the online voting.

In unofficial Web voting, 8-year-old Ellie Mae, an unforgettable Chinese crested, is the heavy favorite. She’s followed by the plucky Squiggy, a Chinese crested-Japanese Chin mix.

The ugly mug competition garners participants from around the world, including a British champ named Mugly.

“I’ve been producing the world’s ugliest dog contest for seven years now. It’s been a wild ride,” said event producer Vicki DeArmon, in the Daily Mail.

The contest judges on four categories: First impressions, unique features, personality and audience reaction, the Daily Mail reported.

The winner will be determined by the panel of judges, but it’s not too late for online readers to vote for a favorite here.
