Two 17-year-old girls were stopped for shoplifting at a Manhattan Victoria’s Secret Thursday afternoon, but when the suspicious security guard checked their bags he found what appeared to be a human fetus inside.

One girl was hospitalized and the other was being questioned by police, authorities said. The medical examiner’s office was performing an autopsy on the remains, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities are trying to determine if one of the girls gave birth in the lingerie store, or if she had been carrying the remains with her. She told police she delivered a day earlier, but didn’t know what to do with the remains, though it’s not clear if the child was dead before birth, police said.

One of the girls admitted she had “a baby in the bag,” CBS New York reported. She later told police that she had given birth to a fetus Wednesday and did know who what to do with the remains, the station said.

Police are also investigating whether the girls had actually shoplifted, or whether they will face criminal charges.
