HUEYTOWN, Ala. (AP) - Jefferson County sheriff’s officials say a convicted sex offender who was caught umpiring a girls’ softball league is free on $30,000 bond.

Sheriff’s spokesman Randy Christian said Tuesday that Hueytown police told them 36-year-old Fred Allen Thomas III was umpiring the children’s games. Thomas surrendered to authorities on March 21 and was charged with failure to register employment within the prescribed time and loitering in specific areas, said Sgt. Jack Self.

The softball association Thomas was working for was responsible for screening employees, sheriff’s officials said in a statement. Thomas worked three games before a parent reported him to police, authorities said.

Thomas had previously been convicted of sexually abusing a 6-year-old girl, Self said. Christian told AL.com that Thomas was umpiring a game for girls between the ages of 8 and 10. Thomas pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender in 2007 and was sentenced to five years in prison.

It’s unclear if Thomas has an attorney and a number listed for him has been disconnected.
