HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A Gary city councilman who pleaded guilty to failing to file tax returns has received a three-year prison sentence.

As part of his plea deal, 42-year-old Ronier Scott agreed to pay back about $33,000 in outstanding taxes, fees and interest. Federal Judge John E. Martin said Scott’s punishment would require prison time because he set a poor example as an elected official.

Scott had pleaded guilty in December. He acknowledged during Tuesday’s sentencing hearing that he didn’t file on income earned through his council position and a family business between 2000 and 2003, and for the years 2008 and 2009. Scott told the judge he wanted to take responsibility for his mistakes.

Martin said Scott didn’t apologize, but Scott’s attorney says he apologized in a letter filed with the court.
