CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) - A University of Iowa advertisement placed in the University of Northern Iowa student newspaper has sparked surprise and some criticism.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1kpYekp ) the ad in The Northern Iowan newspaper last week prompted enough criticism that the paper published an editorial Monday explaining the ad.

UNI student and executive editor Linh Ta noted in the editorial that the newspaper is independent and doesn’t provide public relations for the university.

UNI public relations director Scott Ketelsen says he’s heard some students weren’t happy with the ad, which details Iowa’s summer session options. The ad also will run in the Iowa State University newspaper.

After initially being “appalled,” UNI student body president Tom Madsen decided if a student could save money by taking Iowa’s summer classes, he supported it.
