AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The Maine Office of Securities wants to talk to people who either invested or were approached about investing in a treasure hunter who claimed a sunken British merchant ship contained platinum bars worth $3 billion.

Last year, a group of investors filed a claim in federal court asking a judge to strip Greg Brooks and his companies of salvage rights to the Nicholson, sunk 50 miles off Cape Cod by a German U-boat in 1942.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Brooks has been searching for sunken treasures for three decades without success.

The Office of Securities encourages people who have information about Brooks or his companies, including Sub Sea Research, Sea Hunters or Deep Sea Hunters, to call a toll-free number, 877-624-8551.
