HAMMOND, La. (AP) - A Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man near Hammond in what started as a report of a domestic disturbance.
The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1h32Ol6 ) 48-year-old Michael C. Nichols Jr. was found holding a knife and standing over his injured 70-year-old mother, Barbara J. Nichols, inside a home when deputies arrived about 12:35 p.m. Tuesday.
Louisiana State Police Trooper Greg Marchand says Michael Nichols was shot and killed. His mother was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition was not immediately known.
Marchand says the number of deputies involved in the shooting and number of shots fired is still being investigated. Once complete, he says state police will turn its findings over to the parish district attorney’s office.
