SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a man who was fatally shot by Sierra Vista police last weekend.

Sierra Vista police say the man was 40-year-old Lauro Jesus Avechuco.

The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday when a police officer tried to stop a car on Arizona 92 near Golden Acres.

After stopping briefly, police say Avechuco sped off and the officer fired several rounds at the car after Avechuco allegedly drove toward him.

Police say the Sierra Vista resident was fatally wounded. A passenger in his car ran from the scene and hasn’t been located.

The two-year veteran has been placed on administrative leave in keeping with department policy for officer-involved shootings.

An investigation is being conducted by the FBI, Sierra Vista police and the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.
