WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says damage from recent flooding has been wide-ranging and warns that Lake Champlain is nearing flood stage.

About 45 roads were closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Officials say a bridge also washed out in Johnson.

The National Weather Service also says widespread flooding will occur along the Passumpsic River in Lyndonville and St. Johnsbury Center.

The weather service says homes and businesses on U.S. Route 5 along the river between the two communities will be inundated.

Most rivers around Vermont are receding and should drop below flood stage, but overnight snow and ice made for some rough travel.

In Maine, officials say a 74-year-old man died after being swept downstream when he stepped into a culvert after moving his truck across a flooded road.
