FULL NAME: Janet Kay Ruthven Hagan.

EARLY YEARS: Born May 26, 1953, in Shelby. Spent most of her childhood in Lakeland, Fla.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree, Florida State University, 1975; law degree, Wake Forest University, 1978.

OCCUPATION: U.S. senator, 2009-present; attorney; worked at predecessor company of Bank of America for 10 years.

PREVIOUS POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: N.C. Senate, 1999-2008, serving as co-chairwoman of Senate Appropriations Committee; Guilford County campaign manager for Gov. Jim Hunt in 1990s. Helped on U.S. Senate campaign of her uncle, Lawton Chiles and mayoral campaigns of her father in Lakeland.

FAMILY: Husband, Chip, an attorney; three grown children, one grandchild.
