NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The mayoral race in New Jersey’s largest city is literally heating up.

Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for a man accused of setting fire to Newark mayoral candidate Ras Baraka’s campaign bus.

Authorities say 43-year-old Michael Benkowski is wanted for 3rd degree arson, criminal mischief and burglary. He remains at large.

The bus was torched in front of the Baraka headquarters on Feb. 16.

Investigators say they traced a van used in the arson to a person who is paid to work for the campaign of Baraka’s opponent, Shavar Jeffries. That worker has not been charged.

Jeffries issued a statement saying anyone involved in the arson must be prosecuted. He said it was unacceptable behavior for any supporter regardless of which candidate they back.
