DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A 21-year-old college student is getting a scholarship for his role in rescuing three children whose mother drove their minivan into the surf off Daytona Beach.

The executive board of the Foundation for Seminole State College of Florida surprised Stacy Robinson with the award Tuesday.

Robinson told the Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://bit.ly/1ebkBGu ) he had no idea when he was invited to the board meeting that he would receive the $1,000 scholarship. He says it’s a “good feeling.”

Robinson ran into the Atlantic Ocean March 4 when he was Ebony Wilkerson’s van drive into the water. He helped pull the children - ages 3, 9 and 10 - from inside the submerging vehicle.

Wilkerson is under the care of Halifax Health Medical Center. She faces attempted murder and child abuse charges.
