FREEPORT, Ill. (AP) - A Freeport man has pleaded not guilty in his ex-girlfriend’s shooting death.

The Journal-Standard reports (https://bit.ly/1hrduyt) that 31-year-old Kevin Scott entered the plea Thursday before 15th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Michael P. Bald at the Stephenson County Courthouse. Scott is charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count each of domestic aggravated battery, aggravated assault, unlawful restraint and aggravated unlawful restraint.

Police say they found 31-year-old Melissa Nickel unconscious and bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head on April 8. She died the next day at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Officers shot Scott after he tried to flee when they were attempting to negotiate with him. Scott appeared in court Thursday in a wheelchair.

Scott is held on $1 million bond.
