DOVER, Del. (AP) - Dover Mayor Carleton E. Carey Sr. says he is stepping down from the position he has held since 2007.

Carey submitted a letter of resignation to the city clerk on Thursday, saying he wants to spend more time with his family. His resignation will be effective Monday.

Carey was first elected mayor of Delaware’s capital city in 2007. He was re-elected in May 2012 and that term was to end in May 2015. Carey has served in city government for 22 years.

City Council President David Bonar will become acting mayor. Dover’s charter requires a special election no more than 60 days after the mayor’s office becomes vacation.
