CAMPO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a 19-year-old man from San Diego County who was trying to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the U.S.-Mexico border more than 100 miles north to Idyllwild in Riverside County has died.

Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser tells U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/Pz0goj) the hiker from Julian was about 20 miles into his hike at Lake Morena on Thursday when he began feeling sick and called his father from his cellphone.

The father called 911 and gave directions to Cal Fire crews, who found his son unconscious and not breathing. They could not revive him and he was declared dead.

The hiker’s name was not released, and the cause of death was not clear. Temperatures were in the low 70s.
