SANDY, Utah (AP) - Three-term Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz has easily held off two challengers for his party’s nomination in Utah’s 3rd Congressional District.

Chaffetz earned nearly 88 percent of delegate votes at the Utah Republican Party’s nominating convention Saturday.

He needed to win 60 percent to avoid a primary battle.

His challengers, software engineer Robert Stevens and photographer Mark Hedengren, each earned less than 7 percent.

Chaffetz will face Democrat Brian Wonnacott in the general election.

Wonnacott is a software engineer who faced no challengers for his party’s nomination on Saturday.

The 3rd Congressional District stretches from the southeast suburbs of Salt Lake City to the Arizona and Colorado borders.
