PITTSBURG, Calif. (AP) - Authorities have identified a Northern California man who was found dead after his car apparently plunged into a canal.

The Contra Costa County coroner’s office says 56-year-old Dennis Sandoval of Pittsburg was behind the wheel of the car rescue crews discovered Wednesday morning.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District inspector Lisa Martinez said that authorities received a report around 9:45 a.m. that a car was in the Contra Costa Canal in Pittsburg.

Divers found Sandoval still strapped in his seat belt and extricated him from the submerged car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pittsburg Police say Sandoval called his family Tuesday evening to say he was on his way home from work. His family reported him missing six hours later.

Police believe Sandoval’s car jumped a curb, hit a fence and went into the water.

The incident remains under investigation.
