PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona state Sen. Anna Tovar says she’s filed an exploratory committee to run for a seat on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

The Democrat is seeking the seat being vacated by District 5 Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox. Wilcox plans to step down to run for Congress representing the 7th District in south Phoenix. Longtime Rep. Ed Pastor is retiring from that seat. Wilcox and Pastor are also Democrats.

Tovar tweeted photos of herself filing paperwork for the exploratory committee Thursday morning.

Tovar was elevated to the Senate minority leader slot last October after fellow Democrats ousted Sen. Leah Landrum Taylor from the seat.

Tovar is keeping her Senate seat while gauging support in the county district. She says she won’t make a decision on running until Wilcox formally resigns.
