ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - Winthrop University says it has received the largest gift from a single donor in the Rock Hill school’s 128-year history.

President Jamie Comstock said Winthrop had received a gift of more than $2.2 million from the estate of the late Ann Coleman Peyton.

Winthrop says Peyton was an English professor at Florida Atlantic University for three decades and retired in 1997. Peyton’s cousin attended Winthrop, and her mother was from Lancaster.

Comstock says the money will go toward funding scholarships to help recruit students interested in becoming theatre majors.

Winthrop says the first scholarships are expected to be awarded in 2015.
