BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Authorities say a Mandan man is accused of attempting to strangle an emergency room doctor trying to treat him.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/S6FZbM ) that 25-year-old Paul Robert Belgarde was charged Monday with felony aggravated assault.

Bismarck Police Officer Steven Brauner says he was called to a hospital emergency room Saturday morning for a report of a disorderly patient. He says hospital staff members were holding Belgarde down when he arrived.

Sgt. Mark Buschena says Belgarde had been found intoxicated and unresponsive and was taken to the emergency room for treatment.

Police say Dr. Tyler Price told officers Belgarde pushed him against the wall and squeezed his neck “with enough pressure to impede his airway for multiple seconds.”

Police say the doctor had redness and swelling on his neck.
