EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State University says it’s received $3.9 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a range of projects to help Michigan farmers deal with climate change, food safety and marketing.

The grants announced Wednesday come from the department’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative.

Michigan State says that $975,000 is going to a program to improve the meat quality of turkey. It says that professor Gale Strasburg will work on ways to help turkeys better adapt to extreme weather changes.

The university says that about $500,000 will go to create an incubator farm at the Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center to help northern Michigan residents and students enter the agriculture industry. Professor Matthew Raven heads the project.
