JENKINSVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Officials are planning to power down the reactor at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station for routine maintenance and refueling.

On Friday, South Carolina Electric & Gas says the reactor is scheduled to go offline, something the facilities does once every 18 months.

The planned outage allows workers to replace the nuclear fuel assemblies that help generate power and do other maintenance work that can’t be done while the reactor is running.

SCE&G; officials say other generating plants will pick up the slack while the reactor is down.

The utility is building two other reactors at the site, but those are several years away from operation.
