ATLANTA (AP) - Southern Co. is investigating what caused one of its nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle (VOH’-gohl) in Georgia to automatically shut down.

Power company officials and federal regulators said the incident early Tuesday on the Unit 2 reactor posed no threat to the public. No radiation was released, and no serious damage to the plant’s equipment was reported.

Southern Co. officials told federal regulators that it suffered a malfunction in a feedwater system, which helps recirculate water through a loop that generates the steam necessary to create electricity.

The reactor was reported at normal temperatures Tuesday.

The utility had dispatched a team to investigate the cause of the problem.
