Hillary Clinton declares war on the Redskins, says name ‘insensitive’” (Web, July 29) says Mrs. Clinton is joining the Democrats in deeming the Redskins’ name “insensitive.” The upheaval around the Redskins’ name is warranted, but there is a bigger issue at play here.

As a culture, we often neglect to take into account each other’s emotions. We don’t take the extra initiative to research the offensive origins of certain words, and we stick them upon establishments, teams and everyday citizens.

As a black woman with family in the Deep South, I might have been offended the first time I observed a sign with the word “plantation” on it. However, no matter what your race, you are surely aware of the history of plantations and how such a sign could be a sensitive topic for black Americans.

For me, the only conclusion left to draw is that if we are going to take aim at a sports team, we should open our eyes to all the other disguised offenders.
