ANALYSIS/OPINION:

There has been no comment on President Obama’s attempt to measure political change in Baghdad with our military opposition to the Islamic State. Mr. Obama, in trying to foster Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish comity in the central government, is essentially telling these groups to become inclusive or the United States will moderate its military response to what the president now admits is a cancer of inhumanity and a threat to us here at home.

This approach may garner huzzahs in faculty lounges where “junior varsity” activity is appreciated, but it does not play well where I hang out. The Islamic State is a threat to the entire civilized world, and our active military opposition cannot be held hostage to the vagaries of parochial political rivalries in a tenuous state on the verge of dissolution.
