UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. (AP) - Provost Donald Bachand has been hired as Saginaw Valley State University’s new president.

The Saginaw News reports (https://bit.ly/1aPbSgM ) that the school’s Board of Control announced the selection Monday during a board meeting.

Bachand has spent 35 years at the university. He starts work Feb. 17 as president and said Monday he was “humbled by the appointment.”

More than 40 people applied for the position last fall.

Bachand succeeds Eric Gilbertson who announced last June that he would retire and return to teaching. Gilbertson has been the school’s president since 1989.

Saginaw Valley State University has about 10,500 students.
